Kink & Sensation-Play Glossary

Kink & Sensation-Play Glossary

Kink has a language of its own, and like any specialist vocabulary it can feel like a locked door from the outside. This glossary is our plain-language key to it. Claws & Clamps designs and makes precision sensation-play tools in Melbourne, so these are the words we work with every day, and we think everyone exploring this space deserves clear, accurate, judgement-free definitions to work from.

The entries below cover consent and structure, roles and dynamics, sensation play, bondage, roleplay, community language, and the practical side of safety and care. Every definition here describes practices between informed, consenting adults. Nothing on this page is a how-to guide, and nothing here is a substitute for careful negotiation, good information, and getting to know your own limits and your partners'.

Consent comes first, always

Every practice in this glossary depends on the same foundation: clear consent, honest negotiation, and the freedom to stop at any point. A term appearing here is a description, not an endorsement or a dare. Explore at your own pace, learn from experienced and reputable sources, and never treat a definition as instructions. Some practices carry real physical risk and call for specific skills and safety knowledge before anyone tries them.

A

AftercareConsent & structure

The care partners give each other once a scene ends: comfort, warmth, water, quiet, reassurance, or whatever helps everyone return to an even keel. Intense play can leave people physically and emotionally raw, so aftercare is treated as part of the play, not an optional extra. It applies to everyone in a scene, including the person who was in the dominant role.

Related: Drop, Subspace, Check-in
Age playRoleplay

A form of roleplay between adults in which one or more participants take on a younger headspace or role. It is a consensual dynamic focused on nurturing, structure, or care, and like all roleplay it involves only adults. It is distinct from, and unrelated to, any interest in actual minors.

AutoclaveSafety & care

A machine that sterilises equipment using pressurised steam. In a kink context it comes up around gear that can be fully sterilised between uses, such as metal implements. For most everyday play, warm soapy water is sufficient; autoclaving belongs to the higher cleaning standard used when play may break skin or when tools are shared.

B

BDSMFoundational

An umbrella acronym stacking three overlapping pairs: Bondage and Discipline, Dominance and submission, and Sadism and Masochism. It is a broad label for a wide family of consensual practices rather than a single activity, and most people who use the term engage with only some parts of it.

Related: Kink, Power exchange
Blood playSensation · edge

Play that intentionally involves small amounts of blood, for its visual, psychological, or sensory charge. It is edge play: it carries genuine risk of infection and injury, requires knowledge of hygiene and first aid, and depends on partners knowing each other's health status. Defined here for reference only, not as a practice to attempt without proper preparation.

Body-safeSafety & care

Describes materials that are appropriate for contact with the body: non-toxic, non-porous or properly finished, and able to be cleaned. Claws & Clamps makes its claws from body-appropriate materials such as medical-grade nylon, biocompatible resin, and titanium or aluminium, chosen for the kind of contact each is designed for.

BondageBondage

The consensual restriction of a partner's movement, using rope, cuffs, straps, tape, or other restraints. Motivations vary widely, from the aesthetic and the meditative to the psychological experience of surrender or control. Circulation, nerve safety, and never leaving a bound person unattended are core to doing it responsibly.

BottomRoles

The person who receives sensation or action in a scene. Being a bottom is about the receiving role in a given moment and does not necessarily imply submission: a bottom can be fully in charge of how a scene runs. Compare with submissive, which describes a power dynamic rather than a physical role.

Related: Top, Submissive, Switch
BratRoles & dynamicsalso: brat taming

A submissive or bottom who playfully resists, teases, or challenges their partner rather than obeying smoothly. "Brat taming" is the answering dynamic, where the dominant partner enjoys meeting that resistance. It is a consensual game of push and pull, agreed in advance, not genuine defiance.

C

Caregiver / littleRoleplayalso: CGl, DDlg

A nurturing dynamic between adults in which one partner takes a caregiving role and the other a more dependent, "little" headspace. Abbreviations such as CGl (caregiver/little) and DDlg (daddy dom/little girl) name common variants. The focus is on care, structure, and comfort, always between consenting adults.

CBTSensation · edgecock and ball torture

Sensation play focused on the male genitals, using pressure, impact, temperature, or restraint for intense stimulation. It calls for care, anatomical knowledge, and clear limits, and clamps are one of the tools used in it. Defined for reference; not a how-to.

Check-inConsent & structure

A deliberate pause during play to confirm everyone is still comfortable and consenting. It can be as simple as a spoken question, a squeeze of the hand, or the traffic-light system. Regular check-ins keep consent live and ongoing rather than a one-time agreement made before the scene began.

ClampsProducts & play

Adjustable compression devices that apply controlled, deliberate pressure to a chosen part of the body, such as nipples or genitals. The sensation comes both from the pressure itself and from its release. Claws & Clamps makes labia, scrotum, and flesh clamps with adjustable wingnuts and parallel jaws for even, controllable pressure. Clamps are their own category, complementary to claws rather than a kind of claw.

Clawing / claw playSensation

Dragging claws or nails across the skin to create scratching sensation, from a feather-light tease to firmer, more intense contact. It is a form of sensation play prized for how precisely it can be controlled and varied. Purpose-made claws, like those Claws & Clamps designs, extend and sharpen this in a way that stays consistent and deliberate across a scene.

Collar / collaringRoles & dynamics

A collar is a worn symbol of a submissive's commitment to, or ownership by, a dominant partner, loosely comparable to a ring in other relationships. "Collaring" is the act or ceremony of giving one. Meaning ranges from a play-only accessory to a serious, lasting relationship marker, depending on the people involved.

ConsentFoundational

The freely given, informed, specific, and reversible agreement of everyone involved. It is the non-negotiable foundation of all kink. Consent can be withdrawn at any time, cannot be given under coercion or serious impairment, and covers a specific activity rather than a blanket yes. Everything else in this glossary sits on top of it.

Consensual non-consentConsent · edgeCNC

An advanced dynamic where partners agree in advance to play that feels non-consensual in the moment, such as staged resistance or struggle. The consent is real and negotiated beforehand; the "non-consent" is the roleplay. It relies on deep trust, thorough negotiation, and robust safety signals, and is generally considered edge play.

Cosplay clawsCommunity · historical

A historical term from the original Etsy-era product, now used only as a generic descriptor rather than a specific product name. Claws & Clamps organises its range by collection (material) and style (geometry), so a set is always a style plus a collection, such as Kitten Metal Claws, rather than a single "cosplay" line.

Cross-contaminationSafety & care

The transfer of bodily fluids or bacteria between people or between body areas via shared, uncleaned gear. Avoiding it is a core hygiene principle: clean tools between partners, and choose the right cleaning standard for the kind of play. It is the practical reason materials that can be properly cleaned matter.

D

DegradationRoleplay

Consensual play with demeaning or "dirtier" language and scenarios, for partners who find an erotic or psychological charge in it. It is negotiated carefully because it touches on self-image, and it is distinct from humiliation, which tends to be lighter and more embarrassment-based. What reads as degrading to one person is neutral to another, so limits are personal.

DominantRolesDom, Domme

The partner who takes the leading, controlling role in a power-exchange dynamic. "Dom" is the common short form and "Domme" is often used for a woman in the role. Being dominant is an active responsibility: it involves reading a partner, holding limits, and steering a scene safely, not simply issuing orders.

Related: Submissive, D/s, Top
DomspaceSensation & psychology

The altered, focused headspace a dominant partner can enter during intense play, driven by adrenaline and concentration. Like subspace it can affect judgement and is often followed by a comedown, which is why aftercare and check-ins matter for the person leading a scene too.

Related: Subspace, Drop, Aftercare
D/sRoles & dynamicsDominance and submission

Shorthand for a Dominance and submission dynamic, the power-exchange half of BDSM. The capital D and lowercase s visually signal the flow of authority. A D/s dynamic can be confined to scenes or extend through a relationship, and it can exist with or without physical sensation play.

DropSafety & wellbeingsub drop, top drop

The emotional or physical comedown that can follow intense play, sometimes hours or days later, as adrenaline and endorphins recede. It can feel like sadness, fatigue, or vulnerability, and affects both submissive partners (sub drop) and dominant ones (top drop). Good aftercare and gentle follow-up help manage it.

DungeonCommunity

A space set up and equipped for BDSM play, whether a dedicated room at home or a venue at a club or event. It usually holds furniture and fixtures designed for restraint and scening. Public dungeons run on house rules and etiquette, including respecting others' scenes and never touching people or gear without asking.

Related: Play party, Scene

E

EdgeplaySensation · edge

A loose category for practices carrying higher physical or psychological risk, where the "edge" is part of the appeal. What counts as edge play is subjective and shifts with experience, but it commonly covers things like breath, blood, needle, knife, and fear play. It calls for advanced knowledge, rigorous safety, and deep trust.

ElectroplaySensationelectrostimulation, e-stim

Sensation play using low-level electrical stimulation to create tingling, buzzing, or sharper sensations across the skin. A violet wand is one common tool. Because they are conductive, Claws & Clamps Metal Claws are compatible with violet-wand electroplay, which is one of the experiences the metal range is designed for. Electroplay is avoided by anyone with a heart condition or a pacemaker, and current is kept away from the chest.

EndorphinsSensation & physiology

The body's own feel-good chemicals, released in response to intense sensation such as impact or scratching. They are a large part of why demanding play can feel euphoric or floaty, and their later fall-off contributes to drop. Understanding the endorphin curve helps explain both subspace and the comedown that can follow.

Related: Subspace, Drop

F

Feather / soft sensationSensation

The gentle end of the sensation spectrum: feathers, soft brushes, fingertips, or a light drag of claws used to tease and heighten anticipation. Soft sensation is often used to contrast with sharper input, keeping the skin and nerves guessing so that firmer contact lands with more impact.

FetishFoundational

A strong erotic focus on a specific object, material, body part, or scenario. In everyday use "fetish" and "kink" are often swapped, though strictly a fetish points to a particular fixation. It is a normal variation in human desire and, practised consensually, simply another way people experience attraction.

Related: Kink
Fitting padsProducts & play

Small inserts that take up space inside a claw's finger cup to snug up a slightly loose fit. Claws & Clamps supplies fitting pads with all Premium Nylon Claws, so a set can be fine-tuned to the wearer's hand. They are the simplest way to dial in comfort without changing size.

Related: Clawing
FrenzySafety & wellbeingsub frenzy, top frenzy

The rush of early enthusiasm that can lead someone new to kink to dive in faster or harder than is wise, waving through limits they have not really thought about. Recognising frenzy in yourself is a safety skill: it is a cue to slow down, negotiate properly, and let experience catch up with eagerness.

Related: Negotiation, Limits

G

GroundingConsent & structure

Techniques that bring someone back to the present and steady after intense play or a strong emotional moment: touch, breathing, a familiar voice, water, or a wrapped blanket. Grounding is a practical part of aftercare, especially when a partner is deep in subspace or feeling wobbly afterward.

Related: Aftercare, Drop

H

Hard limitConsent & structure

A firm boundary that must not be crossed under any circumstances during play. Hard limits are absolute and non-negotiable, named during negotiation, and respected without argument. They might cover specific acts, words, or body areas. Ignoring one is a serious breach of consent.

Humiliation playRoleplay

Consensual play with embarrassment and shame as the erotic or psychological driver, ranging from teasing to more elaborate scenarios. It is usually lighter than degradation and, like it, is deeply personal: careful negotiation matters because the line between a fun charge and real hurt sits in a different place for everyone.

I

Ice playSensation

Temperature play using cold, most often ice, to send sharp, surprising sensation across warm skin. It pairs naturally with its opposite, warmth, to keep the nerves alert through contrast. Simple to start with and a common gateway into sensation play more broadly.

Impact playSensation

Striking the body for sensation, with the hand or with implements such as paddles, floggers, crops, or canes. Intensity ranges from a light warming rhythm to sharp, stinging strikes. Responsible impact play means knowing which areas of the body are safe to strike and building up gradually rather than starting hard.

K

KinkFoundational

A broad, friendly umbrella term for sexual or sensual interests outside the conventional mainstream, from sensation play to roleplay to power exchange. It is deliberately non-clinical and non-judgemental. Practised with consent and care, kink is simply part of the healthy range of adult desire.

Related: BDSM, Fetish, Vanilla
Kink-awareCommunity

Describes professionals, especially in health, therapy, and medicine, who understand kink and treat it as a normal variation rather than a problem to be fixed. A kink-aware practitioner lets people be honest about their lives without fear of judgement, which is why community-maintained directories of them exist.

Related: Sex-positive
Knife playSensation · edge

Sensation and psychological play using a blade against the skin, drawing much of its charge from the fear and focus it creates rather than from cutting. It is edge play with obvious risk, and even "sensation only" knife play calls for skill, steady handling, and hygiene. Defined for reference, not instruction.

Related: Edgeplay, Blood play

L

LeatherCommunity

The name of an established BDSM subculture and its traditions, historically rooted in gay men's communities and now much broader. "The Leather community" refers to this heritage of protocol, mentorship, and events, and is a cultural identity rather than a description of any single practice.

Related: Protocol, Dungeon
LimitsConsent & structure

The boundaries that define what a person will and will not do in play. Limits are split into hard limits, which are absolute, and soft limits, which are conditional or "maybe". Knowing and communicating your own is a core skill, and respecting your partners' is non-negotiable.

LittleRoleplay

A person who takes a younger, dependent headspace within a caregiver dynamic. Being a little is about comfort, play, and being looked after, and it exists only between consenting adults. See the caregiver entry for the fuller dynamic.

M

MasochismSensation & psychology

Deriving pleasure or erotic charge from receiving pain or intense sensation. A masochist enjoys sensations that would usually be avoided, reframed within a consensual, trusted scene. It is the receiving counterpart to sadism, and the two often, though not always, pair up.

Master / slaveRoles & dynamicsM/s

A committed, often round-the-clock power-exchange dynamic in which one partner holds authority and the other gives deep, structured service. M/s is usually more total and relationship-defining than a scene-based D/s dynamic, built on extensive negotiation and trust. The language is chosen by the people in it and stays consensual throughout.

MunchCommunity

A casual, social gathering of kinky people in a public, vanilla setting such as a cafe or pub, with no play involved. Munches are a low-pressure way to meet people, ask questions, and find community, and are often where newcomers make their first real-world connections.

Related: Play party, Vanilla
MummificationBondage

A form of bondage that wraps and encases the body, using materials such as plastic wrap, tape, or bandages, to restrict movement and heighten sensory focus. It combines restraint with sensory and temperature effects, and requires attention to breathing, overheating, and safe, quick release.

N

Needle playSensation · edge

Edge play involving sterile single-use needles placed through the surface of the skin, for sensation and psychological intensity. It demands genuine knowledge of anatomy, hygiene, and safe sharps handling, and carries infection and injury risk. Included here for reference only.

Related: Edgeplay, Blood play
NegotiationConsent & structure

The conversation before play where partners agree what will and will not happen, share limits, health information, and safewords, and set expectations. Good negotiation is specific and honest, and it is where consent is actually built. Skipping it is the single most common source of scenes going wrong.

Related: Consent, Limits, Safeword
Nerve fatigueSensationsee: Topping out

The point at which a stretch of skin stops registering sensation clearly after sustained input, as the nerves temporarily saturate. Understanding it helps a top vary pressure, texture, and location to keep a scene alive. See the Topping out entry for how material choice affects it.

Nipple playSensation

Stimulation of the nipples through touch, sensation, or pressure, including the use of clamps for a steady, building squeeze and a sharp release. Sensitivity varies widely from person to person, so it is an area where starting gently and communicating is especially rewarding.

O

ObjectificationRoleplay

Consensual play in which one partner is treated, for the duration of a scene, as an object or a piece of furniture. For those who enjoy it, the appeal is the release of surrendering agency within safe limits. Like all such dynamics, it is negotiated, time-bound, and reversible.

Related: Degradation, Service
Orgasm controlRoleplay & sensationorgasm denial, edging

A dynamic in which one partner controls whether and when the other reaches climax, through permission, denial, or repeatedly approaching and backing off (edging). The charge is in the power exchange and the anticipation. It ranges from a single scene to an ongoing arrangement.

Owner / petRoles & dynamics

The relationship pairing behind pet play, where one partner takes the role of owner and the other of an animal, such as a kitten, pup, or pony. It can be playful, service-focused, or a deeper ongoing dynamic, and a collar often marks it.

P

Pet playRoleplay

Roleplay in which a participant takes on the persona and behaviours of an animal, commonly a kitten, puppy, or pony, while a partner takes the owner or handler role. Motivations vary from headspace and stress relief to power exchange and community identity. Gear such as ears, tails, and collars often features.

PinwheelSensationWartenberg wheel

A small handled wheel of fine spikes, originally a medical tool for testing nerve response, now widely used in sensation play. Rolled across the skin it produces a sharp, pricking sensation that can be varied by pressure and speed. A popular, controllable introduction to sharper sensation.

Play partyCommunity

An organised event, private or at a venue, where kinky people gather to socialise and to play in a shared space under agreed rules. Play parties run on consent culture and etiquette: watch respectfully, never interrupt a scene, and ask before touching anyone or their equipment.

Related: Munch, Dungeon
Power exchangeRoles & dynamics

The consensual transfer of authority from one partner to another, the core of Dominance and submission. One person agrees to lead and the other to follow, within negotiated limits. It can be switched on for a scene or woven through a whole relationship, and it is always a gift that can be withdrawn.

Predicament bondageBondage

Bondage arranged so the bound person must choose between two uncomfortable options, for instance a position that eases one strain only by increasing another. The interest lies in the deliberate dilemma rather than in a single fixed pose. It layers psychological play over physical restraint.

Related: Bondage, Restraint
Pressure playSensation

Sensation created by sustained, controlled compression of the skin or tissue, often with clamps. Much of the experience is in the contrast: the steady build of pressure, and the vivid rush when it is released and blood returns. Placement, duration, and a gradual release are the keys to doing it well.

Related: Clamps, Nipple play
PRICKConsent & structurePersonal Responsibility, Informed Consensual Kink

A consent framework standing for Personal Responsibility, Informed Consensual Kink. It builds on RACK by stressing that each participant owns their own choices and their own risk. One of several shorthand philosophies the community uses to talk about doing kink thoughtfully.

Related: RACK, SSC
Primal playRoleplay & sensation

Play that leans into raw, instinctive energy: growling, wrestling, chasing, biting, and scratching, stripped of formal protocol. It can be predator-and-prey in flavour and pairs naturally with clawing and marking. Even at its most instinctive it stays inside negotiated consent and limits.

ProtocolRoles & dynamics

An agreed set of rules and rituals governing how partners behave within a dynamic, from forms of address to posture to permission-seeking. Protocol can be light and occasional or elaborate and constant. It gives a D/s relationship structure and makes the power exchange tangible in everyday moments.

Related: Ritual, Service

R

RACKConsent & structureRisk-Aware Consensual Kink

A consent philosophy standing for Risk-Aware Consensual Kink. It accepts that some practices carry risk that cannot be fully removed, and holds that partners should understand those risks and choose to accept them with eyes open. Many see it as a more honest frame than SSC for more demanding play.

Related: SSC, PRICK, Edgeplay
RestraintBondage

Anything used to limit a partner's movement, from rope and leather cuffs to straps and purpose-built furniture. Restraint is the practical heart of bondage. Whatever the tool, the safety rules hold: watch circulation, protect the nerves, and always keep a way to release quickly.

RitualRoles & dynamics · sensation

A repeated, meaningful sequence of actions that marks or deepens play, such as a set way of beginning a scene or presenting a tool. Ritual turns activity into experience and can create a strong sense of focus and occasion. Atmospheric tools, like light-reactive Crystal Claws, are often chosen for exactly this scene-setting role.

Related: Protocol, Scene
RoleplayRoleplay

Taking on characters or scenarios to shape a scene, from specific personas to broad power dynamics. Roleplay lets partners explore situations and headspaces safely inside an agreed fiction. Everything stays consensual and negotiated, and the fiction ends when the scene does.

Rope playBondage

Bondage using rope specifically, spanning simple functional ties through to the artistry of Japanese-influenced styles. Rope has its own culture, skills, and safety knowledge, particularly around nerve points and never leaving someone tied unattended. See Shibari for the aesthetic tradition.

Related: Shibari, Bondage

S

SadismSensation & psychology

Deriving pleasure or erotic charge from giving pain or intense sensation to a consenting partner. In kink, sadism is expressed within trust, negotiation, and care, the giving counterpart to masochism. It is about a shared, wanted exchange, not harm for its own sake.

SadomasochismSensation & psychologyS&M

The combined giving and receiving of pain or intense sensation for mutual enjoyment, the S and M of BDSM. It describes the interplay between a sadist and a masochist, or the enjoyment of both sides. As always, the defining frame is consent and trust.

Related: Sadism, Masochism, BDSM
SafewordConsent & structure

A pre-agreed word or signal that immediately pauses or stops play, chosen because it would not come up naturally in a scene. It lets a bottom or top halt things without breaking a roleplay or being mistaken for staged protest. Honouring a safeword instantly, every time, is fundamental.

Safe, Sane and ConsensualConsent & structureSSC

A long-standing consent motto holding that kink should be safe, undertaken with sound judgement, and fully consensual. It is a useful starting principle, especially for newcomers, though many prefer RACK for play where risk is inherent rather than fully removable.

Related: RACK, PRICK, Consent
Sanitising vs sterilisingSafety & care

Two different cleaning standards. Sanitising, such as washing with warm soapy water, reduces germs to a safe level and is genuinely sufficient for typical play like skin contact, sweat, and scratching that does not break skin. Sterilising removes essentially all microorganisms and is the standard reserved for play that may break skin or for gear shared between people. Choosing the right level is a practical judgement, not a reason for alarm.

SceneConsent & structure

A single, bounded episode of play with a beginning and an end, whether a five-minute moment or an hours-long session. Thinking in scenes helps partners frame consent, negotiation, and aftercare around a defined experience. "The scene" can also mean the wider kink community.

Related: Play / session, Aftercare
ScratchingSensation

One of the most immediate forms of sensation play: dragging nails or claws across the skin to produce anything from a shivery tease to sharp, focused intensity. Its appeal is control and range from a single tool. Claws & Clamps exists for exactly this, designing precision claws that make scratching consistent, sharp where wanted, and endlessly variable.

Sensation playSensation

The broad family of play built around physical sensation on the skin and body, from soft and teasing to sharp and intense. It includes scratching, temperature, texture, pressure, and much more, and is often where people first explore kink because it is so easy to keep gentle and controlled. Precision tools, the core of what Claws & Clamps makes, are about giving sensation play range and intention.

Sensory deprivationSensation

Deliberately removing one or more senses, most often sight with a blindfold or hearing with earplugs, to sharpen the others. With less to predict, each touch lands harder and anticipation grows. It is a simple, powerful way to heighten sensation play and is easy to start with a blindfold alone.

ServiceRoles & dynamics

A form of submission expressed through doing things for a dominant partner, from small rituals to substantial tasks. For a service-oriented submissive, the act of being useful is itself the reward. Service can be a whole dynamic or one thread within a broader relationship.

Sex-positiveFoundational

An outlook that treats consensual sexuality, in its full diversity, as healthy and worth approaching without shame. Sex-positive spaces welcome open, honest conversation about desire and practice. It is the cultural ground kink communities, and Claws & Clamps, stand on.

Related: Kink, Kink-aware
ShibariBondagekinbaku

A Japanese-influenced tradition of artistic rope bondage that treats the tie itself as beautiful, blending aesthetics, sensation, and connection. "Kinbaku" is a closely related term with a more intimate or erotic emphasis. Both are skill-intensive and carry real safety considerations around nerves and circulation.

Related: Rope play, Bondage
Soft limitConsent & structure

A boundary that is conditional rather than absolute: a "maybe", a "not yet", or a "only under certain circumstances". Soft limits can shift with trust, mood, and experience, but only ever with fresh consent. They are explored gently and never pushed past without a clear, in-the-moment yes.

Related: Hard limit, Limits
SterilisableSafety & care · products

Describes gear that can be sterilised for hygienic reuse, which matters most when play may break skin or when tools are shared between people. Claws & Clamps Metal Claws can be sterilised, for example by boiling or autoclaving, and Crystal Claws can be sterilised by wiping down with Viraclean or a similar disinfectant. This is a capability, not a claim that any product arrives sterile. For everyday play, warm soapy water is enough.

SubspaceSensation & psychology

An altered, often floaty or euphoric headspace a submissive or bottom can enter during intense play, driven by adrenaline and endorphins. It can feel blissful but also cloud judgement and mask pain, which is one reason ongoing check-ins and attentive aftercare matter so much. Not everyone experiences it, and that is entirely normal.

SubmissiveRolessub

The partner who consensually yields authority in a power-exchange dynamic. Submission is an active, chosen role, not passivity or weakness: a submissive sets limits, holds a safeword, and gives their trust deliberately. It describes a power relationship, distinct from "bottom", which describes receiving sensation.

Related: Dominant, Bottom, Switch
SwitchRoles

Someone who moves between dominant and submissive roles, or between topping and bottoming, depending on the partner, the mood, or the day. Switching is a role in its own right, not indecision, and many people find the flexibility of experiencing both sides part of the appeal.

Related: Dominant, Submissive, Top

T

Tease and denialRoleplay & sensation

Building a partner's arousal and anticipation while deliberately withholding release, sometimes repeatedly. The charge lives in the tension, the waiting, and the control being exercised. It overlaps with orgasm control and can run from a single scene to an ongoing game.

Temperature playSensation

Using hot and cold to create vivid, contrasting sensation on the skin, with ice, warmed objects, breath, or temperature-conductive tools. Metal is a natural fit here: because they conduct heat and cold well, Claws & Clamps Metal Claws can be warmed or cooled to add a temperature dimension to scratching and touch. Contrast is what keeps the nerves awake.

Texture playSensation

Playing with contrasting surfaces against the skin, since how something feels is about more than how sharp it is. Sharp and scratchy are independent qualities: a blade is sharp but not scratchy, sandpaper is scratchy but blunt. Across the Claws & Clamps range, nylon is the scratchiest, matte titanium sits close behind, and crystal and polished metal are smoother while still sharp, which lets a top vary texture as well as intensity.

TicklingSensation

Light, teasing stimulation that provokes laughter, squirming, and a peculiar mix of pleasure and can't-take-it. As kink, tickling is negotiated like anything else, since for some it is delightful and for others genuinely hard to endure, and it can be combined with light restraint for extra charge.

TopRoles

The person who gives sensation or performs the action in a scene. Like "bottom", it describes a physical role in the moment rather than a power dynamic: a top is not necessarily dominant, and can be directed by the person receiving. Compare with dominant, which is about authority.

Related: Bottom, Dominant, Switch
Topping from the bottomRoles & dynamics

When the receiving or submissive partner steers or controls the scene, whether by agreement or against the spirit of the dynamic. It can be a welcome, negotiated arrangement or a point of friction, depending on what the partners intended. The term is used both neutrally and as a gentle criticism.

Related: Brat, Power exchange
Topping outSensation

The moment a receiver's nerves reach their limit for a given input and further sensation stops registering with the same edge. Smoother tools such as crystal and polished metal tend to allow longer play before this point than the scratchiest surfaces do, which is one reason material choice, not just sharpness, shapes a scene. Varying texture, pressure, and location resets the experience.

Total power exchangeRoles & dynamicsTPE

A dynamic in which the exchange of authority extends across the whole relationship rather than being confined to scenes. TPE is among the most committed forms of power exchange and rests on exceptional trust, communication, and ongoing consent. Even here, consent remains present and can be withdrawn.

Traffic-light systemConsent & structure

A simple, widely used check-in and safeword scheme: green means good and keep going, yellow means ease off or check in, and red means stop now. Its clarity makes it easy to use mid-scene, and it works well alongside a dedicated safeword.

Related: Safeword, Check-in

V

VanillaCommunity

A friendly, non-judgemental term for sex or relationships without kink, and for people who are not into it. It is descriptive rather than a put-down. Many people move fluidly between vanilla and kinky depending on partner and mood, and "vanilla" settings, like a cafe munch, are where community often begins.

Related: Kink, Munch
Violet wandSensation

A handheld device that produces a low-current, high-voltage electrical charge, delivering sensations from a soft tingle to a sharp spark across the skin. It is a classic electroplay tool. Conductive gear can be incorporated into violet-wand play, and Claws & Clamps Metal Claws are compatible with it. It is kept away from the chest and avoided by anyone with a pacemaker or heart condition.

W

Wax playSensation

Dripping warm candle wax onto the skin for a spreading heat sensation and the anticipation of each drop. Temperature depends on the wax type and the height it falls from, so knowledge of suitable low-temperature waxes and safe areas is part of doing it well. A popular strand of temperature play.

A note on using this glossary

Language in kink is living and personal. Terms shift between communities, and two people can use the same word slightly differently, so treat these definitions as a clear starting point rather than the last word. If you are exploring something new, learn from experienced people and reputable sources, negotiate openly, and go at the pace that feels right for you.
